Proud Father

Not about colour today – you will have to indulge me as a father. In fact tonight is the first night i am home alone with my boys. It has been a good time for all of us i think. Here are a couple of stories from the last few days – little things that have made me proud as a father.

Double it

A few days ago my son Daniel really impressed me. He and I were talking about the creation of life (as one does from time to time). I think we got onto the subject by noting some of the different combinations of mummy and daddy features between him and his brother.

To try to explain I introduced the idea of something from mummy and something from daddy joining. In fact i said it was like the daddy part had a key that could open the door to the mummy part and then go inside – like going into a house. So it look like one from the outside. But then once they met inside they could make a second one – 2. And then each one would make a new one again – double 2 is 4 and then … “8″ he said interrupting me. He went on to say “16″ “32″ “64″ … I was impressed. After a moment i said “Double it” I. “128″ he replied. “Double it.” “256.” He did these hardly hesitating. I paused and then just had to say “Double it” again. “512″ All this in his head! He continued to be able to do 1024, 2048, 4096 all without any help – and all in his head; just at 8192 he missed out the 100. Incredible to me – he is still not yet 7 years old.

Tipping Point

And then today, we were talking about the centre of gravity, (my other son Timothy was kicking back his chair so the question of at what point something would fall over was important). We used a cup tilting on its side to find the point of no return. A few minutes later he was taking dessert from the fridge in the way I have asked him not to and accidentally he knocked a container which fell and broke. I was annoyed and for a while he went quiet. Then, when i has settled down again he said. “Well it is connected – it lost its centre of gravity.”

I couldn’t help but smile. How sharp is he. It is good to be home.

And then there were three

I will mention my other children too – Cleo my daughter is 14, is doing really well in her exams at the moment. And she sings a solo Ave Maria soon in a school concert. Timothy is just over 1 year old. Big and strong for his age, not at all shy, today =it was his motor skills that impressed me. He was playng with a torch, putting the batteries in and out of it. Again and again he slipped them in pretty easily – hardly banging the left or right side at all. That is impressive for such a young age.

What can i say – they must take after their mother :)
