It started me thinking about numbers …

44 – the number for the UK

The UK international telephone number is +44. It is very interesting because since 4 is the number of the Emperor in the Tarot one could expect 44 to be a doubly strong Emperor. However my theory is that double numbers are actually the undoing of that number and instead offer the stepping stone to the message of the next number. So 44 is really the undoing of the Emperor – an Emperor in transformation. Indeed we see this in the colour of B44 – pale violet in the top fraction is opposite to the yellow of B4 (see my future book on numbers for more about this).

Constitutional Monarchy

But here is the thought for today. The United Kingdom is both the most famous monarchy in the world – and yet it is also, as far as I know, the original constitutional monarchy – that means a kingdom where the power of the monarch (king / queen) has been limited by agreements with the people. The British monarchy has survived because it submitted to the rule of law. Amazing then that in B44 we have not only the violet of surrender but also the pale blue in the base: blue is the colour for the law. To return to 1642 then – as mentioned above – this is the definitive date when the monarchy lost the battle with the House of Commons. If we take this date as Equilibrium colour combinations it perfectly represents this process. B16 violet /violet and B42 yellow yellow – these two complementary colours are the quintessence of this conflict between the power of the self – yellow / the emperor, and violet / surrender and transformation.

A final coincidence

Other dates have been important too … 1215, 1649, 1688 – all have a story to tell. But I leave you instead with another 44 association – it is the number of constitutional monarchies as listed by Wikipedia that have survived into the modern world.

How you deal with aloneness is in the blue. But with regard to the news headlines about loneliness as a cause of leaving the body the answer is more pink. Just as babies need pink to come into the family and onto earth, the elderly need pink to stay.

It took some time for me to adjust these absences – my mind was especially missing words, ideas, and a plot. Instead i found the opening scenes were so obvious, like a pantomime, obvious jokes though made in a good natured way. My mind was thinking “Will I enjoy this?” “Can I really sit through this for an hour and a half?”

Thinking gives way to feeling

Yet little by little, without realizing, I found these images and sounds began to open up my feeling side more and more. I was relaxing into a different way of relating to what I was watching: the visual cues from the actors, their larger than life expressions and actions; the ever present orchestral music providing a commentary – a language all of its own. I began to follow this story without words, began to flow with it, feeling the situations and characters, empathising without needing to refer to understanding.

In one of the final scenes high drama is punctuated by a moment of comedy. It works so well, the comedic moment elicits involuntary laughter from the audience and then it is immediately back to an intense silence as we need to see how the situation will resolve. It was amazing to experience this immersion in the moment relating in a way so different to the usual mental alert required in our modern world of information overload and decreasing attention span. Here was an experience in the opposite direction, slowing down, relaxing into flow and feeling, following without words.

Netsach not Hod

If I were to place this experience in the Tree of Life I would say it was very Netsach (feeling) and not at all Hod (thinking). It crossed my mind afterwards if the state of mind I was in during the film was closer to my early childhood perceptions before language was really formed and I watched faces and events unfold in a more open and accepting way A film worth the experience, a film for the feeling side of being.

I think the chessboard contributed greatly to our experience. Not having one here I had to make one and it just so happened that the easiest to make was a large yellow squared design. It was such a different feeling from the traditional black and white style which creates such an extreme polarised atmosphere. Our time playing was light, airy, and educational. I showed him how to move the pieces and what to consider as we played. I am sure this larger-than-life board with its light yellow squares gave the energy to play in this positive, intellectually stimulating, way.

Yellow has long been associated with the intellect in Aura-Soma, by chance this proved a great way to benefit from its positive influence. The crystals also brought an original, colourful, and concentrating dimension to the whole process. Here is a picture.

It is interesting isn’t it that this school so deep in the English countryside far from the outside world is so international. Yet it seems fitting when I consider that in this same village is the international headquarters of the Aura-Soma Colour System. I have been coming here since 1987 and in those 25 years I have seen so many groups of brightly dressed foreigners walking around the village. The energetic field of the village must be buzzing with their presence. I am sure the school, which has now won awards for its international efforts three years in a row, is in some kind of resonance with this international vibration.

You know the headmaster once told me one of his happiest school possessions is his flagpole and set of world flags. He likes to use as many as he can  – flying a country’s flag to celebrate their national holiday or other similar events.

We live in one atmosphere, we are all inspired by the same air!

The Rabbit that popped out from the Hat

He came because on Day 1 I gave the example of the rabbit and the hat to show something about the 1 and the 0. The Magician (B1 in the Tarot), uses his wand (1) to call the rabbit out from the deep, dark and mysterious 0 of the black hat.

The Zero underneath this course

It is funny because 0 appeared in my thinking even while I was travelling to the course. You can see my previous post about a moment of golden sunlight stimulating thoughts of B22 as a return to the 0 of The Fool. It was for this reason that I and my host, Susse Smedes, chose a Deep Magenta candle for the course. And another funny thing is that at the end of each day we gathered as a circle around this magenta candle and together we blew out the flame with the intention of returning it to the Source!

A Cosmic Rabbit?

We were 21 in the room for the course. 19 students plus my host Susse and myself. It was a very dynamic group, friendly and enthusiastic. And now I think about it I notice that 21, which is the path of The World, has, as its Return Journey, the Equilibrium bottle B99- a combination sometimes referred to as “Cosmic Rabbits”. So on the journey out I was thinking of the first Return Journey path 0/22. Now I am returning it is with the last Return Journey path 21/99. It seems I mad a round trip!  And it gives me the feeling that B100 is then like a Cosmic Rabbit Hole. Enoch who is the Prophet associated with Metatron is said to have been the only one raised up to look upon the face of God. I am looking at the 100 in the opposite direction, the Cosmic Rabbit diving into the Cosmic Rabbit Hole at the end (9) of the end (9) of the journey through life. Deep deep down to the 0 behind the 0 behind the 1.

I have a three week break from teaching now, perhaps I shall rest and be refreshed in this ultimate depth. In fact the next course I teach is a Level 3 at the start of March. Level 3 is an unfolding of the Tree of Life and Metatron is at the very Source of this process  – so I shall be picking up energetically where I have left off with this Numerology course.

A moment of golden sunlight on the way to Numerology course

Actually i knew we were going to be 21 on the course including me and it struck me that this golden light could somehow make 22.  The master of the golden ray is Lady Portia – the Pale Yellow / Pale Pink which is hidden inside the B22 Yellow Pink combination. B22 is also the  bottle for the Return Journey of the Fool – it brings us back to zero and completes the circle. And so I went to the numerology course with thoughts of zero … and of a mysterious extra dimension being added from above.

I once heard some scientists discussing whether Nothingness was actually possible in the Universe. As the conversation progressed they turned their attention to the quantum field – the field of energy which underlies this material world of atoms. One of the scientists said something which made me remember a sentence from the very early days of Aura-Soma – a sentence about Twin Souls. The scientist was discussing the way that matter emerges out of the quantum field of energy and then returns to it. He said that the creation of particles (matter) out of the quantum field is generally (perhaps always?) done in pairs. One of the two particles is considered to be “matter” while its partner is named as “anti-matter” This pairing is vital in the world of science because it allows the energy account of the universe to be kept in balance. These particles will sooner or later, usually it is very much sooner, come together again in a way that they cancel each other out and disappear back into the quantum field of nothingness.

Everyone has their own voice

The first was that on this Facebook page he wrote personally as “I” not “we”. He did not try to speak for others – he spoke only for himself – even though he believed that many others would feel as he did. As he expressed it: “Everyone has a voice. I was very keen to be part of the mainstream – I did not want to be a leader.” When I heard this I thought Turquoise. His choice honours the Aquarian ideal of democracy – that everyone has a voice (Facebook and the internet is also like this). This can be compared with revolutions of the previous time when revolutionary leaders such as Lenin etc spoke for the collective.

How to bring a virtual movement into the real world?

Wael said that this was the big question for the people visiting the Facebook page. “Would the virtual world become active in the real world?” This mention of two worlds put me in mind of a Tarot card image – that of B86 the Return Journey of Justice in the original Aura-Soma Tarot.

As you can see there is a lady within a kite shape between two pillars. She holds a sword that points down to what appears to be the water of a lake. In the water appears the reflection of the sword. This image shows something about the Tree of Life – the kite shape within which the lady appears is the inner world – the world of potential. The water of the lake represents the outer world. The world of physical action. The internet discussion “how can the virtual world have an effect on the physical world” is represented in this image which shows that movement – an impulse from above to below or from within to without.

Egypt and a Turning Point.

As I write I notice an unexpected synchronicity – Wael Ghonim created the Facebook page on 8th June. That is 8/6 (UK style), these two numbers brought together make 86 – the number of the bottle that relates to the previous Tarot image! Moreover we could say that within 86 – 6 is an energy of turning point for 8. B8 is named Anubis – a very Egyptian resonance. And what is more B8 is the Outward Journey of the Path of Justice for which B86 is the Return!

Part 1. Introduction : Making a Collage

One of the things I really appreciate in a collage is when the central image seems to fit perfectly in its new context.

I have come to realize the key to this is in the cutting out of the image. It is always good to completely release the image you want from its background. The more carefully and accurately the image is cut out – the more easily it can be inserted into, onto and over any other image.

I realized this while watching a student struggle to find a place for an image of a woman she wanted to include in her collage. The problem was that the woman had not been removed from her background – she was still in her own box. Consequently she could not be merged easily into the new picture – the straight line of her box always seemed to cut across something. The image ended up in the bottom corner of the collage – one of many images in her collage that created a rather fragmented effect.

As this insight of the importance of removing the background appeared the B54 Equilibrium bottle, Serapis Bey, came to my mind. This is the Clear/Clear combination. One association for the Clear, particularly when it appears in the base fraction, is with nomadic people. This collage idea had given me an insight into this association.

I understood that the less background one carries (and therefore the more clear one is) the better one can integrate into a new situation. For example, I write this today in a Russian city during wintertime. I know that when I step outside tonight my gold coat and orange scarf will immediately tell the locals I am not from here. No man here wears such colours. To fit in here I would have to let go of my english clothes. In so doing I would become more clear and, in this example, we could also say I would be travelling light that is without a heavy suitcase.

Our background is not just physical

However the background I carry is not just in my suitcase. It is in my mind, in my aura. It includes my outlook on life, my beliefs, my values, my experiences from the past etc.  All these invisible things can also create some disturbance with any new environment.

To help us understand the power of our unconscious background lets consider the example of a family moving to a foreign country. Imagine there is a young baby in the family. It will be the least affected by the move, it will hardly notice the change. Being so young the baby has very little background yet. Its conscious mind – like the clear fractions in the top half of the New Aeon Child Set bottles. – is still fairly empty.

Older children may find the new situation difficult initially, but as they make friends they too will be integrated into the new environment. Ultimately it will be the grown ups who will find it hardest to fully become part of the new culture as it is they who are carrying the most background with them.

The absence of a background helps us more easily integrate into new environments. But there is more. A well cut out central image in a collage does not only fit in, it also stands out. Read Part 2 to find out why …

Part 2. Deeper Thoughts

There is a film called Life in a Day assembled from personal videos filmed and uploaded to YouTube on a single day of 2010. One of the characters is a Korean man, Okhwan Yoon, who is cycling around the world. He had already been on the road for many years and it was while I watched him walking through a crowded city street with his bicycle late in the evening that I experienced a moment of deep respect for him. How can he be willing to find a new place to sleep every night, a new place to eat every day – it would be so stressful for me. He must be continuously open to the new. He can carry so little background with him even from just last week or yesterday.

And then another thought struck me. Carrying so little as he does, is he not vulnerable to being filled up by the things around him? If I were him I imagine I could easily get lost in everything I meet. It is usually our background that provides a buffer between ourselves and the immensity of life. But he carries no background! It is just him: without headphones, a busy schedule, etc. – just him and the world which he has to engage with every day. How does he keep a clear sense of himself? How does he keep focused? I imagine the example of water – water is clear in itself but it is easily clouded by whatever it comes in to contact with. How does he keep clear?

There must be some protective quality that keeps him in his own integrity and focus while his outside world is in constant swirl and flux. This protection is is not in the barrier of his possessions or his physical background, it must be in his aura, in his presence, some kind of diamond-like quality that keeps him sharp and concentrated. I had thought of clear as being vulnerable in its transparency but I see now that clear can also be as hard as a diamond.

Conclusion

Most people carry their background with them all the time. This carrying is however unconscious since their background causes no discomfort with the community within which they live. Their clothes, their attitudes, their social connections, are all supported by those around them.

When we move to a different community however we will begin to become aware of our unconscious background as it fails to fit in smoothly with the new environment. Both we, and the members of the new community into which we have moved, will notice that we do not belong. If we are fit in to our new environment some adjustment in our existing background will have to take place.

But there is a third possibility – a possibility which is connected to my original insight about what makes a strong central image in a collage. It is the person who carries no background. In this world this will be a rare being.

Clear, the Moon and the Hermit

Much of the background we carry is deeply unconscious. Astrologically speaking our unconscious habits and conditioning are indicated by the Moon – which in Aura-Soma is also associated with the Clear and B54!

The part of us that wishes to become conscious of and free of this conditioning is represented by the Hermit in the Tarot. It is he who closes his eyes to the world, whether familiar or unfamiliar, in order to engage directly with the process of dissolving his unconscious ties with his own background. The Who am I? question being the tool to remove many layers of false identity.

What remains at the end of this process is the essence. Simply being, present, and looking out. This type, like the images I cut out to place in my collage, may be placed anywhere and not be lost in its surroundings.

I realize now though that my original thought – that an image with its background carefully removed can “fit in” with any environment – is not entirely true. While such an image does not conflict with the new environment, nor does it merge in. Rather the opposite – it is clearly defined, in sharp relief to everything around it, it stands out. The fact is that with no background of its own an image appears strongly as itself no matter where it is placed.

When I am in Russia I stand out because of the background (clothes, etc) I carry with me. An image with no background will stand out because of its pure essence. Okhwan Yoon can be such a person I believe. Spiritual teachers living in the present would be another.

How can I be clear enough to be anywhere and yet belong nowhere?

So here finally is the question. How can I be present, conscious, in a way that does not create disturbance with the environment, and yet in a way that I keep my own integrity and awareness? How can I be clear enough to be anywhere and yet belong nowhere?
