The meaning of the name Sharon came up as a question yesterday. The first thing that comes to my mind when i hear the name Sharon is a memory of Vicky Wall’s in class quoting a phrase from the Bible – the Song of Solomon in the Old Testament. “I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys.” (Solomon 2:1). She quoted this when talking about the Sapphire Blue pomander. She did not mean that the Rose of Sharon was in the pomander, rather that something of the sense of this phrase resonated with the energy of the Sapphire Blue.
Sapphire Blue and Sharon
At the time this association made no sense to me but researching now on the internet i have found an interesting connection. Here is a text I found (and have adapted slightly) from the website ww.abarim-publications.com
The famous theologian Gesenius “plausibly connected” the name Sharon to the verb (yashar 930), meaning to be level or straight. This verb appears quite often in Scriptures denoting law abiding, compliance to a moral or ethical standard. Most derivatives of this verb carry this meaning of lawfulness. (Only the noun (mishor 930f), which means “level place” or “plain” (Isaiah 40:4, Jeremiah 21:13) appears to be different.)
Blue is Law
This is interesting because blue is the colour that represents the law. It carries the power of the word, the power of a higher authority. Blue is straightness – in English we have the expression “true blue”. In its essence blue is the doorway to the Source. To be aligned with this through blue is to be at one with life, to be at peace. This experience is beyond forgiveness and separation. The problems of yellow have no place or purchase when we are in the peace of pure blue. So Sharon resonates with this. A straightness and integrity with the law, an acceptance whose consequence is a deep peace in self and life. It would suit someone say with B44 in the first position.
The Plain of Sharon
I think it could be argued that the meaning of level place or plain is also connected though. When constructing a building a mason will use a spirit level to ensure that the foundations are true. This ensures that the blueprint will not be compromised as the building rises.
The Rose of Sharon is so named since it grew in abundance on a large plain (Sharon) in the Holy Land. It is not a true rose – it is of the mallow family – here is a picture.
