“Part detective, part midwife” – the Aura-Soma Consultant

This phrase came to me during the consultation skills course I am teaching these days to describe the role of the Aura-Soma Consultant. (A midwife is the lady in the hospital who helps the mother to give birth to her baby)

Part detective …

A fundamental question for every consultation is “What is it in the client’s life that these bottles are resonating with?” The exact answer to this will never be found in a book because every client’s story is unique and individual. It is by engaging with the client in an open, sensitive, and intelligent “working together” exploration that the answer to this question can emerge. Listening for clues, asking good questions and putting the pieces of the picture together – these are the skills of the detective which the Practitioner uses to serve the client.

Part midwife …

Understanding is only one of the goals of the consultation though. The potential of a real and positive change in the client’s life is also a key wish for any consultation. In my opinion the achievement of change is a very subtle thing and so it is with care that I choose this word “midwife”.

The role of the midwife is more subtle – after the birth she is no longer needed, the baby is clearly in the hands of the mother from that point on. My role and goal as Practitioner is similar. I support the birth process but do not do the work for the client, and afterwards the outcome of the consultation rests entirely in the hands of the client. My activity is subtle: to be present, attentive, supportive. I hold the space for a seed of potential to be uncovered, recognized and open within the client during the session.

Care

I also attend to this opening seed in its first fragile moments of life during the session. However I know and trust that the energy for the growth of a seed is always contained within the seed itself. All I need do as a midwife is support the opening and rooting of this seedling in the client’s consciousness. I look at it with love, check the soil around it for weeds and obstructions, and with the client choose appropriate nourishment for its vitality and growth, principally in the form of Aura-Soma Products.

My work in the consultation is as much behind the scenes as it is leading from the front. As a student on this most recent course exclaimed to me “It seems like you (Dominic) are doing nothing but something happens!”

It is both a Practitioner Renewal course, a Level 4 consultation skills course and, in Japan, a Teacher Renewal course.

I love how you describe the consultation skill as part detective, part midwife. As a beginning practitioner, I’m rather focused on the “facts” so as to give an accurate consultation, but, of course, every client is a unique individual and there is no “one size fits all” description to give concerning any bottle. I also like your description of holding the space for the client for the seed of potential to grow – so gentle and nurturing. Just lovely!

Thank you Marcia. Every consultation became so much more interesting when i opened up to what i could learn from the client rather than worry about what i should say.
